Orthodontic deals with irregularities of dentition (i.e. crowding teeth, open bite, spacing, impaction etc). It corrects the malocclusion with the aim to achieve healthy and functional occlusion and a better looking smile.
Malocclusion problems vary in severity from mild dental irregularities to severe disproportionate jaw relationships, The treatment approached is therefore variable. The orthodontists will give advice and carry out treatment accordingly. For those patients who are conscious of their appearance during orthodontic treatment, options such as ceramic brackets or lingual brackets are available, Orthodontists may also use mini implants for anchorage during orthodontic movement of teeth.
Invisalign is a new invisible way of straightening your teeth without braces. It uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually move the teeth without metal or wires. It combines the 21st century technology and revolutionary manufacturing to customize a treatment for each individual patient. lnvisalign uses 3-D computer imaging technology to depict the complete treatment plan from the initial position to the final desired position from which a series of custom made “aligners” are produced. Each aligner moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about 2 weeks then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved. The aligners used are made of clear, strong, medical grade non-toxic plastic that is virtually invisible when worn. They look similar to the clear whitening, tray but are custom made for a better fit to move teeth.
There are 4 primary benefits of Invisalign:
- it is nearly invisible – you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing
- It is removable – you can eat and drink what you want in treatment, you can also brush and floss normally to maintain good oral hygiene
- it is comfortable to wear – there are no metal brackets or wires to cause mouth irritation
- It allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan before you start – so you can see how your straight teeth will look like when your treatment is complete.
The lingual braces are attached to the inside of your teeth which is invisible in the ieyes of public.
One of the common situations leading to orthodontic treatment is crowded teeth. In this situation, there is insufficient room for the normal complement of adult teeth, which may require tooth removal in order to make enough space for the remaining teeth.
Severely Crowded Teeth (Teenager)
This patient wished to have his teeth aligned. He has problem keeping his teeth clean and there was tooth decay on the upper and lower front teeth where they overlapped with each other. To align his teeth, he had his two upper and lower premolars removed. Metal braces were used in his case as it was cheaper than the esthetic dear braces, Colored “0” rings were used and changed every visit.
Mid treatment (17 months into treatment)
Completion of Orthodontic Treatment (Total treatment time: 21 months)
Treatment was completed in 1 year and 9 months. Patient was very good keeping to his appointment and teeth move faster in teenager and children as well.
Correction of Teeth Alignment Using Clear Esthetic Braces
This patient was a working female adult patient who wished to have her teeth aligned. She was concerned with the metal braces and opted for clear esthetic braces on the upper teeth.
Mid Treatment (20 months into treatment)
lear esthetic braces were placed on the upper teeth. Metal braces were placed on the lower teeth because she had deep bite where the lower clear braces will wear off the upper teeth when she bites. Notice that there was no staining on the clear braces after 20 months in the mouth. Even with clear braces, colored “0” rings can be placed and does not look awkward.
This patient drinks coffee daily but notice there are only coffee stains on the teeth but not on the clear braces.
Completion of Orthodontic Treatment (Total treatment time: 29 months)
Treatment was completed in 2 1/2 years. In adult patients, treatment duration is longer as teeth move slower. However, this patient was very cooperative and followed the doctor’s instruction in wearing the headgear and rubber bands to move her teeth. This help the doctor a lot in completing her treatment in 2 1/2 years.
